Chichester Racquets and Fitness Club Squash Championships 2017
Throughout the last 3 weeks we have seen rounds of both junior U11, U13, U15, U17 and the senior men’s and ladies’ events played out.
On Friday 12th May all the finals took place.
The junior events started at 4.30pm and finished at 7pm. The main U15 started the finals and the in-form Ethan Randell, seeded 2, defeated favourite Max Burley in 3 tight games. The U15 plate followed and Sam Spooner had too much power for Katalin Johns and came through 3-0.
The girls’ U11s final was next on court and Milly Orr won a 5 game match in what was the longest junior match of the day to defeat Amelie McGurk.
The U13 main final followed with 8 year old George Haig overcoming Katalin Johns after dropping the 1st game and rallying well to win the next 3 games.
Sam Winterhalder, winner of the U13 and U15 events in previous years, played Ethan Randell for the U17 title. Sam took the 1st before Ethan equalled things to take the second and then take the lead 9/5 in the 3rd. From then on Sam’s experience shone through and he came through to take the 4th and then the 5th to claim his 3rd junior title.
After the presentations and photographs the senior ladies took the court; Hannah Wright- Davies v Zoe Shardlow.
These two ladies have played many Club finals together with Hannah always coming out on top. This final was to be no different although as usual Zoe showed some great racket skills and is clearly a talent. Hannah’s power and fitness, however, saw her through in 3 games, to win her 13th Club Championship title.
The men’s final was the best final, witnessed by many, in the last 10 years. 15 year old Louie Martin played fantastic attacking squash to take a 2-0 lead over 51 year old, and National O50 Champion, Steve McLoughlin. Martin faltered at the start of the 3rd and the momentum shifted. Once Steve got a foot in the door he rallied well to take the next 2 games to force a 5th game decider.
In the 5th game McLoughlin was always ahead but Martin continued chipping away at him. In the end Martin saved 5 match points before McLoughlin finally won through 9/7 to take his 4th Club Championship Title.
So that concludes the squash club championships for this season, the next event will be the Racketball Handicap event throughout June.
