Russell Hillsdon 2018 Handicap Squash Championships

The Squash season opener at Chichester Racquets & Fitness Club, which is always the Russell Hillsdon Club handicap, recently took place over a 3 weeks period with the finals being held at the Club on Friday 5th October.

In the plate event, for 1st match losers, Katica Robertson [0] played Jonathan Greyling [-4]; this meant Greyling had to win 4 points before he could start scoring and then it was the first player to reach 15, to the best of 5 games.

A tight first game Katica had several game balls before Greyling valiantly fought back and eventually took the game.    Katica was not to be denied and she focused hard to take the next 3 games to run out a 3.1 winner of the plate event.

In the main event Greg Jansz, who had the highest handicap [-38] in the tournament, played Mat Worden [0].    Jansz took a tight first game before Worden replied to level the match.   In the third Worden forged a 14/6 game ball lead and looked set to go 2-1 ahead.    Jansz, however, had other ideas and playing complete, error free, squash to win the game 15/14.

This proved to be a pivotal point in the match; a now exhausted Worden surrendered the fourth and Jansz won his first Russell Hillsdon title in 1 hr 20 mins of gruelling squash.

Jansz now holds three Club titles with the next event at the Club being the Vets’ Racketball Championships for players over 45.

Fortunately for all entrants Jansz does not qualify for another 15 years!
