Bright Ideas for Tennis Charity Day

Bright Ideas for Tennis Charity Day

‘Bright Ideas for Tennis’ is a Charity with the primary goal of supporting tennis Clubs in the UK by increasing membership numbers, raising participation levels and improving facilities.  Danny Sapsford, a former British Davis Cup Player, from Bright Ideas for Tennis, recently visited Chichester Racquets and Fitness Club.   Danny, supported by Luke Milligan, also a former Davis Cup player, delivered four fantastic workshops to different groups of Club members during the Charity Day Event.

In the first session, 24 mini tennis players ages 5-10 worked on their racket skills, co-ordination and accuracy.  The coaches organised some tennis relays, skill team challenges and throwing practises.   The mini tennis players thoroughly enjoyed the session and had great fun.

The second workshop delivered by Danny and Luke focused on developing power in forehand groundstrokes.   The 18 teenagers who took part in this session all learnt how to use their legs effectively to drive against the ground when hitting both wide forehands and short forehands.

Sixteen social tennis players at the Club then received an excellent session on approaching the net in doubles.   Several drills were set up to encourage the players to look for opportunities to attack the net and take the initiative in the rally.   The players, hopefully, will use these news tactics when playing Club sessions over the next few months!

In the final coaching session of the day, 12 team players and captains received a masterclass in the role of the net player in doubles.  The focus was on where to position yourself effectively at the net in order to intercept shots and how to defend effectively as a volleyer.   The players really improved their movement at the net and their awareness of positional play in doubles.

All money raised from the sessions remains at the Club to be used on an appropriate project.  The CRAFC Tennis Committee along with the Chichester Tennis Academy agreed to use the money to fund coaching sessions for 2 local SENS schools.

The conclusion to the day was an exhibition tennis match involving Danny, Luke and CRAFC tennis coaches Justin Pollard and Peter Cook.   Luke and Peter went up against Danny and Justin and a thoroughly entertaining encounter followed, with a great standard of tennis mixed in with some very humorous moments!

A big thank you must go to the Bright Ideas for Tennis Charity, Justin Pollard, staff at CRAFC and the Tennis Committee for organising a fantastic event.
